A native West Virginian, William Turman graduated from WVU in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

He, along with his brothers, incorporated Turman Construction Company in 1957. The company is recognized as one of the oldest and most respected highway bridge utility companies in West Virginia. Turman has been the president, chief engineer and owner of Turman Construction Company since 1972.

Over his 50-year career, Turman built more than 200 bridges in West Virginia. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Corps of Engineers.

In addition to Turman Construction Company, he also formed and operated Barboursville Bridge Co., Paul's Concrete Inc., H and T Technical Development and Engineering Co. and the Barboursville Testing Company.

Turman has made a significant contribution to the engineering profession by serving on various committees and task forces. He has served on the WVU Civil Engineering Advisory Committee for a number of years.

He has also served on many boards and associations including being president of  the West Virginia Contractor's Association.

Turman has made a significant contribution not only to engineering education but has helped many college engineering students by serving on the selection committee and contributing monies to the WVCA scholarship foundation.
