Donny is a native of Nicholas County, West Virginia and a 1981 graduate of Richwood High School. He earned his bachelor’s (1985) and master’s degrees (1990) in civil engineering from West Virginia University (WVU). Donny was recognized by the American Society of Highway Engineers North Central WV Section as their 2012 honoree.  Additionally, he is a registered professional engineer and surveyor in West Virginia.

The majority of Donny’s thirty-two-year career was with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, where he had a diverse career working in multiple sections including bridge, roadway design, construction, disasters, and research. Before his retirement, Donny was the District Engineer for District 4. In this role, he oversaw all transportation activities for six counties. In addition to working for state government, Donny has also worked in the private engineering sector. His first job out of college was with Whitman, Requardt & Associates. After retiring from the WV Division of Highways, Donny began working part-time with The Thrasher Group.

Donny is passionate about teaching and mentoring. At West Virginia University, he was a practitioner advisor for the student chapter of the American Society of Engineers, and he was actively involved with civil engineering senior capstone projects. Currently, he works with Fairmont State University civil engineering technology students on their capstone projects, conducting guest lectures and providing project feedback and guidance. He is also an active member of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program Advisory Board, a training and technical assistance program.

Donny and his wife Sherry (BS Civil Engineering, WVU) have been married for 33 years and have one daughter, Abigail, a 2020 WVU music education graduate. He is active in his local church and is an avid woodworker.
