Jim Suttle earned a BSCE in 1966 and MSCE in 1967 from WVU. He is former vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the Omaha-based engineering and design firm HDR. He served as executive vice president and director of corporate development for HDR, which is the nation’s seventeenth largest architecture-engineering firm.

Of particular note, Jim's career at HDR greatly expanded the firm's national presence in all modes of transportation, including bridges, highways, railways, traffic engineering, airports, and ports. Under Jim's leadership, transportation blossomed into HDR’s largest business group.

He has been active and served in leadership roles with the American Consulting Engineering Council, the Design Professionals Coalition, and the Design Build Institute of America.

In 2005, voters elected Jim to the Omaha City Council. As a councilman, he serves on the board of the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency and as a member of the Omaha-Douglas Building Commission.
