Larry Nottingham was born and raised on a cattle farm in Braxton County. After graduating from Gassaway High School in 1960, he earned a BSCE degree from WV Tech in 1965, an MSCE from University of Pittsburgh in 1966, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1975.

He began his geotechnical engineering career with Ackenheil & Associates in Charleston, WV from 1967 until 1970. At that time, he relocated to Florida where he attended graduate school of the University of Florida and worked at the Florida DOT research lab. Upon graduating from U of F, he accepted a position with Furgo, Inc. in Long Beach, CA. In 1976, he relocated to Houston, TX where he worked with Fugro Gulf performing offshore geotechnical investigations for the petroleum industry.

In 1979, he accepted employment with Triad Engineering and relocated to WV. He remained with Triad until retirement in 2005. During that period, he served as Kanawha Valley Branch Manager, and as President and CEO of the firm during two different periods.

From 1989 until 1994, he served as Professor and Civil Engineering Department Chair at WV Tech. He also served as Interim Dean of Engineering at WVU Tech in 2007-2008. He has been an active member of ASCE and NSPE and has served as President of the WV Section of ASCE.
