Ray E. Martin served as president, CEO and chairman of Schnabel Engineering Associates prior to his retirement from the firm in July 2002. During his 30 years with the firm, it grew to more than 300 employees and expanded from one office to 14 offices. Dr. Martin was responsible for the geotechnical service area, and he also established the water resource service area.
Dr. Martin served as a member of Virginia Tech's College of Engineering Advisory Board for more than 20 years, including two stints as its chair. He was named the College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus in 2003 and was inducted into the College's Academy of Engineering Excellence in May 2008. He has also been a member of the Virginia Tech Civil Engineering Advisory Board and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni in 1999.
He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the U. S. Society on Dams, and is a past president of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. He is a former adjunct faculty member at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Martin received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 1964 and 1968, respectively. He earned his doctorate in civil engineering from West Virginia University in 1972. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in nine states.
He and his wife of 46 years, Carol, reside in Ashland, Virginia. They have three children and four grandchildren.
